Rosebank College appoints first female Principal in 40 years

Rosebank College appoints first female Principal in 40 years

29 July 2020

Ms Tara McCarthy, Rosebank College’s Board of Directors Chair, announced Iris Nastasi as new College Principal to Parents, Staff and community members. Ms Nastasi will take up the role upon the retirement of Mr Tom Galea, making history as the first female Principal in 40 years and the first female lay Principal in the College’s 154-year history.

In her letter to the Rosebank Community, Ms McCarthy wrote, “On behalf of the College Board and Good Samaritan Education, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Iris Nastasi to the position of Principal of Rosebank College.

With a career in Catholic Education of more than 30 years, Iris spent nearly seven years as Principal at Clancy Catholic College, a large co-educational school in Sydney’s west. Most recently, Iris lent her expertise to Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) performing senior leadership roles. Iris reflects on her period as Principal as ‘the greatest privilege of her career’ and is looking forward to returning to this role at Rosebank College.”

Ms Nastasi explains, “Learning is my passion, and my work is always centred on the learner. My vision for our students is that they achieve learning growth and excellence in a Catholic environment that values critical thinking, effective communication, and responsible decision making. This presents a significant leadership challenge, one that must be strategic and collaborative. This is a challenge, I truly relish.”

Ms McCarthy’s letter went on to say, “Iris’s leadership skills are commendable and were recognised with a ministerial appointment to the inaugural NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Board in 2016-2018.  Iris was also acknowledged by The Australian Council for Educational Leaders (ACEL) in 2018 as recipient of a ‘NSW Leadership Award’, presented by the NSW Minister for Education.”

I am incredibly proud and excited to work in the tradition of the Good Samaritan Sisters and look forward to building on the successes of Rosebank College, a community that values contemporary pedagogy and articulates a vision that is future-focussed and student-centred,” observes Ms Nastasi.

The College Board, along with Good Samaritan Education, looks forward with confidence to welcoming Iris and supporting her as she further develops the significant legacy that Tom Galea has built at Rosebank College.
