Rosebank College Crest

Volume 2, 2024

Friday, 16 February was a fantastic night as parents gathered for our annual Parent Welcome and Information evening at Rosebank. It was a chance for parents to learn about the upcoming school year, connect with teachers and other families and sample some of the delicious offerings from our hospitality students. A big thank you to all who joined us!

Principal's Message

It is with sadness that we share with the extended Rosebank community, the following message from College Principal, Ms Iris Nastasi:

"Dear Parents and Carers,

As you read this, I am travelling to Ireland to be with my family as my mother has just passed away. I feel fortunate to be a part of the wonderful Rosebank community at this time, and I am grateful for all the support that I am receiving.  I want to thank, Paul Hardwick, who will be Acting Principal during my absence for the next two weeks, and I'm comforted that Rosebank will be in very safe hands. Thank you for your understanding.

- Iris"

We hold Iris and her family in our prayers.

From the Assistant Principal

Parent Welcome and Information Evening

We are mindful of the busy lives which parents lead and we thank those members of our community for making the time to attend the Parent Welcome and Information Evening. There was a tremendous amount of information and conversation shared which has laid the foundation for what promises to be an exciting year of learning. We also extend a special thanks to the group of parents who donned their ‘volunteer hat’, assisting our Communications and Engagement team during the social component of the evening – Sally Tagoe-Swanson, Sandra Russo, Lorraine Kavanagh, Binh Pham, Rena Chatterjee, Denise Vassallo, Sallie Rodd, Samantha Hand, Paul Hurst, Noris Scandelin, Harry Platakos and Carmel Meade.

This event was the also the first ‘test’ of the year for our Hospitality students who spent the entire day in a busy kitchen to prepare and serve the canapes for this event.  Under the guidance and support of Ms Pavicic, Ms Gal and Ms Adams, they once again surpassed our expectations.

Another jewel in the College crown, Year 12 McLaughlin student Isabelle Campion, addressed a group of our guests in her capacity as Diverse Learning Leader. Isabelle spoke off the cuff and from the heart, with poise and confidence about her personal learning journey. I felt immensely proud to listen to her speak. It is moments like these, when our students step up and shine, that I truly understand what we mean when we say, ‘This is Rosebank’.

Year 7 Camp and Parent Social

Chatting to the students as they waited to board the buses to the Year 7 Camp, I could feel both the nervous and excited energy emanating from the small groups huddled around floppy pillows and overstuffed bags. While this first high school adventure away from home can sometimes feel a little overwhelming (for mum and dad too), I am never in any doubt that each new group of young learners will reappear victorious in three days – Veni, Vidi, Vici! No doubt there will be many a story to tell and we look forward to catching up with our Year 7 parents at the Parent Social on Friday, 8 March.

College Assembly - International Women’s Day #InspireInclusion

NSW Women’s Week runs from 4-10 March and culminates in International Women’s Day on Friday, 8 March. The global theme of ‘Inspire Inclusion’ will be at the core of our College Assembly on that day and will challenge us all to reflect on our own growth as a community and as individuals as we consider:

‘A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated.’

Rosebank is proud to promote and inspire inclusion across all facets of our learning, pastoral and sporting endeavours and we look forward to this event relaunching our commitment to this practice.

Reminder: Monday, 4 March – Staff PD Day / Pupil Free Day

Assessment Resources

This week, students have been given access to all Assessment Calendars, Handbooks and Grids. Families are encouraged to speak with their children regarding key assessment dates and have calendars visible around the home as a reminder. The relevant Assessment Handbooks can be found on the Parent and Student portals. Please take time to review this information, especially the processes for missed assessment tasks.

Travel Procedures

Students are expected to attend school at all times but we understand that families may have to travel. Should this be the case, families must apply for leave with the Principal, Ms Nastasi. The relevant application form is located in the portal under the tile Forms and Letters.

NAPLAN Information and Dates

NAPLAN is the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy. It is a standardised assessment test for students in Australia, taken by students in Years 7 and 9. The tests are designed to assess students' skills in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation), and numeracy. The results of the tests are used to provide information on the performance of students, schools, and education systems. Teachers at Rosebank use NAPLAN results to support student learning and growth. The 2024 NAPLAN tests will take place between the 13 - 21 March. More information regarding NAPLAN will be sent to families in the coming week.

Atomi

All Year 11 and 12 Rosebank students have access to the online learning platform Atomi which provides a wealth of videos and quizzes aligned to the curriculum. Atomi is an effective way for students to revise and consolidate their learning in class. Students should be attempting the quiz questions on Atomi especially in the lead up to an assessment task. More information can be found here.

Reading at Rosebank and 2024 Year of Learning

As we gear up for an exciting year ahead, we are thrilled to share the highlights of our recent Staff Professional Development Days, starting with our New Staff Induction Day on 25 January. We are so pleased to have welcomed a range of teaching staff into a number of Faculties with subject expertise from university study and experience in different independent and Catholic schools. We are looking forward to you getting to know each of them as we move into the academic year together.

An important part of our Professional Learning calendar is the opening staff days, which occurred on 29 and 30 January. We were blessed to have our Staff Mass led by Fr Tom from St Patrick's Mortlake. Once again, he brought us to our core purpose of love, empathy and commitment to our co-educational, Catholic College, leading us in a blessing of our new colleagues. We always look forward to getting back together for the start of the year and learning how our strategic plan for the students and community will find expression in every sector of the College. We have welcomed our new Dean of Learning, Dorian Kipriotis, and heard his vision for rich student engagement, collaboration and the pillars for success in our Rosebank Learning Culture for 2024.

One of the key collaborations during the 29 January staff day was the Professional Development led by our SRSC and Literacy Coordinator Louise Speke. Louise took teaching staff through strategies for the implementation of effective reading across all levels of year groups and abilities. By making a commitment to work together on implementing a bespoke range of Reading at Rosebank teaching and learning strategies, we are dedicated to equipping our students with the necessary tools to improve depth in reading and gain greater skills in inferring, necessary to excel as a 21st century reader.

Our Curriculum teams, passionately led by our Curriculum coordinators, and Home Room teachers developed and shaped by our Pastoral leaders, were also able to meet with their teams to map out success for the year. After our Professional Development day with special guest and expert in behaviour leadership, Bill Rogers, we involved all our teachers in discussion and consultation. Our year has started with every student engaged in our Rosebank Routine, "Get Ready to Learn." This initiative is aimed at ensuring our students are in the right mindset for optimal learning experiences as they start each lesson - leaving every minute to count towards improvements and personal bests.

Moving into the year, we continue with these major themes - Reading at Rosebank, Getting Ready to Learn. Utilising High Impact Teaching Strategies and reflecting on our practice along the way. Our commitment to each other and our students is in cultivating a nurturing and challenging learning culture that engages every student in every class. As we embark on this new academic year, we are excited to foster a supportive community where each student is empowered to reach their full potential. Here's to a year filled with growth, learning, and success at Rosebank College!

Ministry News

Happy are they who hope in the Lord.

Community is an important part of our life, we are continually in relationship with other people. These relationships may be with family, friends, colleagues and peers, and also with total strangers. For some relationships, they will last until we depart the Earth, others may only last a brief moment in time, yet their importance and significance can – at times - be unmeasurable.

St Benedict in Chapter 3 of the Rule outlines the importance of community: ‘As often as possible the leader shall call the whole community together and explain what the business is; and after hearing the advice of the members, let them ponder it and follow what they judge the wiser course.'

We as a Benedictine community come together to ‘come and see’ the ‘business’ of the College and celebrate its successes. This was seen at the Swimming Carnival, Opening College Mass and most recently at Ash Wednesday. Miss Azzi addressed the College community as we commenced our Lenten journey and challenged each person to ‘ponder’ what they can give up or take up, in order to deepen their relationship with God.

On Ash Wednesday we are told to ‘turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel’ as we received our ashes. This statement has profound meaning in our Catholic tradition. Firstly we need to identify the sin in our lives, areas that can be improved as Benedict states ‘the wiser course’. The question we can all ask ourselves is simple; ‘Does how I live glorify God in all things?’ Secondly we are to be faithful to the Gospel, we are to believe that it is true, we are to believe that it is life and we are to believe that in it – in knowing the Gospel – we meet Christ and in meeting him we see the love of God.

'I am a ‘runner’, not a very good one, but a runner none the less. To be a better runner, firstly I need to run and make running part of my routine each week. I need to set aside time to stretch, to run and to recover. If I am consistent at these things, the hope is that I will become a better runner. If I enter a race, I will make a large commitment, maybe I need to wake up earlier to get a morning run in, change my diet – no take away – to better fuel my body, and take up extra training if I want to achieve a PB. In order to reach my goal I need to change my focus, I have to change.

In the same way during Lent, our goal isn’t to ‘give up things’ in order to have a deeper faith. Our goal is to have a deeper faith and to humbly make the necessary changes to allow that relationship to deepen. To make reading the bible a daily priority, to pray each morning for others, to act with love and charity, to ask, ‘who is my neighbour?’ and ‘how may I serve?’

This Lent, our College community has the opportunity to serve others through a number of projects. The annual Caritas Project Compassion Lenten appeal was launch at Ash Wednesday with each Homeroom receiving a collection box for students to donate to, and soon a link will be available through the parent portal. We are thankful to local businesses Café 49 and Black Poison who have set up a collection point.

Other activities at the College include, daily chapel prayer at 8am, Wednesday Rosary during Break 2, Thursday morning bible study at 8am and Luminos discussion groups at Break 2 every Friday.

In Chapter 49 of the Rule, Benedict encourages us in our Lenten observance to ‘look forward to Holy Easter with joy and spiritual longing’. We are to keep our gaze fixed on the cross of Christ, where he gave the ultimate sacrifice in order for us to deepen our relationship with God.

Vinnies Night Patrol

In 2024 the College has doubled its commitment to St Vincent De Paul’s ‘Night Patrol’ taking on fortnightly participation and as a result being able to open the experience to our students. Year 12 students will have the chance to join staff in providing the important service to our neighbouring communities.

Students in Year 12 who would like to participate need to complete the Expression of Interest form in their emails or email Mr Hansford directly.

Read all about Emma Speranza's experience of the St Vincent De Paul Night Patrol below:

For the first time in a long time in Rosebank's history, student St Vincent De Paul Night Patrol is happening!

Felicity Fogarty, Adelaide Brokenshire, Ava Voukenas and myself, accompanied by Mr Hansford and Ms Azzi, on Tuesday, 13 February, were lucky enough to be the first group of students to attend Student Night Patrol. Having always been on the back end of these programs, be that through helping make the snack packs, sandwiches or donating for various appeals, we all went into this experience curious and unsure of what to expect. We went to two locations throughout the night but after just our first stop, there was mutual understanding between all four of us, about how genuinely grateful every single person receiving food from us was. This experience was truly eye-opening and was an incredible opportunity for us as students to realise the impact our fundraising and volunteering have on the lives of others. It is often hard for us to grasp how what we are doing at Rosebank will impact another person's life, but through opportunities like these, we are able to understand the stories of those less fortunate and understand how we can continue to help them.

We highly encourage all students granted the opportunity to “be bold” and take on this eye-opening experience and be bold. Have the “audacity” to see the difference Rosebank is making in the lives of others.

‘Elvis: A Musical Revolution’ at Sydney’s State Theatre

On Wednesday, 21 February, Years 9 and 10 elective music students were given the privilege of attending ‘Elvis: A Musical Revolution’ at Sydney’s State Theatre. The show was engaging, amusing and educational, and was perfect for us to further our knowledge on our unit of work this term, musical theatre.

The production followed the storyline of Elvis’ life and how he acquired his fame. His story was told through a melodramatic performance of song and dance which highlighted his passion and adoration for music. The show also touched on other themes such as love, grief and personal growth through accurately accentuating the more personal and historical aspects of his life.

"I enjoyed this performance greatly and I am pleased to say that I took a lot away from it. I understood more about how much musical theatre can captivate an audience and how it can tell a story in such a unique and entertaining way.

On behalf of every student who attended, I would like to say thank you to our teachers, Ms Gamma and Ms Hanrahan-Tan, for taking us and giving us such a wonderful opportunity." - Grace O’Neill, Year 10 Music

Callback 2023 HSC Showcase

On Friday, 16 February, Year 11 and 12 Dance students went to the Seymour Centre to view 'Callback 2023'. Callback is a showcase of exemplary HSC works from 2023. Students witnessed students from a variety of other schools across NSW perform their Core Performance, Core Compositions and Major Study Performance and Composition work, along with a Q&A on how these selected students approached their pieces and works. The performances were outstanding and definitely gave our students at Rosebank lots of food for thought and something to strive for.

Congratulations to our Year 12 Maths Accelerator Students

The Accelerator Mathematics program is an opportunity offered to students to finish the Mathematics Advanced HSC course in Year 11, allowing students to finish two units of their HSC program a year ahead. In 2023, 17 students from Year 11 completed their HSC, achieving some extraordinary results, including 11 Band 6s.

“Doing Accelerated Maths was the best decision I made. Getting two units completed a year earlier has really made a difference to my workload, stress and study periods for Year 12. Though it was difficult at times, it was a great experience and I'm so grateful to my friends, classmates and to Mrs Slaney for their help and guidance over the three years - I wouldn't have performed as I did without them!” - Jasmine Azizi, Year 12

“Doing the Accelerated Maths HSC course was a unique experience that I am very thankful I had the opportunity to participate in. By completing 2 units early, I could experience what the HSC trial and exam was like a year before the rest of my subjects, giving me a feel of what it was like. I have to thank Ms Slaney and my amazing classmates who helped me through the challenging journey. I couldn’t have made it this far without the friendly competition and the support everyone gave each other throughout.” - Kaelan Hu, Year 12

“My favourite aspect of the Maths Accelerated experience was that we were all in the same boat. We went through the same journey together, the same difficulties and successes. We began as a bunch of extremely competitive but individualistic Year 9 students, who turned into Year 11 students who would compete to be the most supportive of their fellow classmates. We understood each other a lot more by the end. I'm incredibly grateful for both my class and our amazing teacher, Mrs Slaney, who is the reason that we got through it together.” - Felicity Fogarty, Year 12

“It was really rewarding completing an HSC course in Year 11 because it allowed me to focus on my other subjects as I now have study periods. These periods allow me to complete homework or even complete assignments for all of my other subjects, granting me a massive advantage and opportunity. Additionally, it was also a learning experience for me and my class, coping with our first Trial exam and HSC. I am really content with the end result and would definitely recommend this great opportunity to others.” - Sebastian Salim, Year 12

Overall, it was an opportunity that we would never forget. As a whole, we have taken each high and low and allowed it to make us stronger. The friendships we have formed will stay with us through the years. We thank Mrs Slaney who taught us from Year 9, always supporting us in our times of distress and doubt, Mr Makram for organising the program, and most importantly, the rest of our class for always supporting us and encouraging us to step out of our comfort zone and to improve.

Leadership Afternoon Tea

St Patrick's Strathfield | Prefects Afternoon Tea

On Thursday, 15 February, Maddie Newman, Anthony Pan, Jayden Melhem and I attended the Leadership Afternoon Tea at Saint Patrick's College Strathfield. The afternoon was extremely insightful, beneficial and fun to meet leaders from many schools across Sydney. We started with an ice-breaker, Jeopardy, in which everyone was competitive. Mr. Alex Latouche an Old Boy guest speaker, discussed strategies he used in life to help him achieve his best throughout high school, this included a Japanese concept named 'Ikigai' meaning maintaining a balance in lifestyle that leads to finding purpose in life.

Overall, we met many people across different leadership roles and had a great time getting to know each and every one of them. While also learning about leadership strategies and other beneficial strategies to improve our learning.

Year 10 Pastoral Care Day

On Friday, 1 March, Year 10 students will be involved in a number of presentations as part of our EmpowerED Program at the College. The sessions provide relevant information that will enable them to make informed choices around consent, personal responsibility, current laws and staying safe in today’s society. With the cohort split into genders, our guest presenters Brent Sanders and Trent Southworth will tailor the day to the specific gender needs of our students.

Junior Science Club

Science Club is a wonderful opportunity for Year 7 students at Rosebank to engage in a world of discovery and curiosity, conducting fun and freaky experiments every Monday in J209 during Break 2. Previously, students have created flying tea bags, walking rainbows, flaming strings of steel wool and even homemade ice cream. As they conduct these experiments, they learn the scientific processes and explanations behind each phenomena, further strengthening their passion, understanding and inquiry into science as a whole.

To kick off 2024, these past two weeks Year 7’s were stirring up cornflour slime and inflating balloons using vinegar and baking soda. They had plenty of fun experimenting with the non-Newtonian properties of the slime and watching with avid eyes as their coloured balloons filled rapidly with carbon dioxide from the acid-base reaction, something that is a delight to watch!

"It’s so wonderful for Rosebank to offer Science Club for its junior students to make like-minded friends and to be exposed to how wild, interesting and unpredictable our natural world can be." - Jasmine Azizi (Year 12 Science Curriculum Captain)
