Rosebank College Crest

Volume 2 2025

From the Principal

As you know, being a Good Samaritan College means that we value community connection and see it as a very poignant way to connect our teenagers and young people to their learning and development, self and others. So much of this term has been about just that, connection. It was wonderful to see so many parents at our Welcome and Information Evening, and I look forward to meeting the parents and carers of Year 7 on Friday, 7 March at our Parent Social.

Another community engagement event takes place tomorrow night where our parents have been invited to join us on an engaging twilight tour around the College. Rosebank's Dr Paul O'Shea will lead a pilgrimage of sorts where we share our wonderful history. Once the exploration comes to an end, guests are welcome to relax in the beautiful outdoor Birra Birra setting to enjoy canapĂ©s, drinks and conversation with other parents and members of the Leadership and Ministry teams. For those of you who have had the pleasure of listening to Dr O'Shea present, you know that we are in for an evening of good humour, great conversation and captivating stories as he reveals Rosebank's fascinating history, while we follow along.

The whole school is abuzz in anticipation for the school musical production of Mary Poppins. Staff and students involved have returned from an immersive camp in preparation for the show. So much goes on behind the scenes and there is a palpable sense of excitement, vibrancy and creative energy. I honestly believe that the most critical learning takes place in the lead-up to the performance, the collaboration and appreciation of all contributions, the practice and refinement of skills, and the sense of team and school pride. The performance itself is an added joy and one which brings me great pride. We have had a record number of tickets sold with many of our future families attending. I can’t imagine a better way to learn about Rosebank. Of course, none of this would be possible without your ongoing support. Thank you.

Our Year 7 students left for camp this morning in a haze of excitement and a little trepidation! They look forward to three days together at Stanwell Tops. This experience will help them form lasting bonds and develop deep friendships. The opportunity will also push our students to take risks and put themselves out there and to be present in our world.

I am grateful to all our teachers and support staff who give up their family time to accompany and support our girls and boys on this, and all, camps. I know you join me in thanking them for their commitment and care.  I look forward to joining the group for dinner tonight.

Finally, many of you may have been following the news of the Pope's illness.  Pope Francis has been in hospital for several days now with a serious bout of pneumonia in both lungs. This prayer was posted on Facebook last week by Fr James Martin, a brother-Jesuit of Francis. Pope Francis has been a beacon of good news for all humanity. Let us join in praying for him as he has consistently prayed for us.

From the Assistant Principal

Thank you to all the parents who made the time to join us for the Parent Welcome and Information Evening. There was a tremendous amount of information and conversation shared which has laid the foundation for what promises to be an exciting year. Visit the ‘Parent Engagement’ page via the Parent Portal to view some of the information covered  during the year group presentations on the evening. This event is always the first ‘test’ of the year for our Hospitality students who spent the entire day in a busy kitchen to prepare and serve the canapĂ©s for our guests. Under the guidance and support of their incredible teachers Mrs Gal and Mr Ha, they once again surpassed our expectations.

It was wonderful to have three generous mums, Samantha Hand, Joanna Riccobono and Mellissa Ferguson join our team of staff as hospitality volunteers to help serve drinks during the social component of the evening. We hope to have a few more ‘hands on deck’ to volunteer an hour or two of time at the Open Day Food Hall in Term 2 on Sunday, 4 May. Planning is already underway for our biggest community event of the year and the events team would love to hear from you if you can lend a hand. Please email pandf@rosebank.nsw.edu.au.

Over the past two weeks I have been fortunate to spend some time catching up with our students around the College. On Valentine’s Day, Ms Goodenough and her Year 7 RE class generously welcomed me to their ‘Cups of Love’ activity before I joined students in the SRSC to enjoy a ‘Date With a Book’, complete with background jazz and an inviting ‘Coffee Shop’ scene on the big screen! This was a well-run initiative which received tremendous support from the students. Ms Gyi and Ms Cesaro, who were looking after everyone when I arrived, are to be commended for finding a unique and engaging way to continue to deepen the reading culture at Rosebank.

I was also lucky enough to catch the Mary Poppins Musical musicians in rehearsal and had the opportunity to learn a thing or two about the MalletKAT instrument from a very talented James Lagis in Year 9 Adamson. Strangely, I have yet to be asked to return for a second audition.

Out on The Green, the ‘Future Problem Solvers’ charmed me into buying far too many chocolates as they work to raise funds for their upcoming trip to Indiana, USA, in June. I am also excited to be working with the Vaughan House Captains as they fine-tune an exciting whole-school fundraising initiative for Term 2.

China Study Tour - 2026

Our Languages Coordinator, Ms De Jong, has confirmed an exciting study tour of China in 2026. This will be open to all students currently in Years 8, 9 and 10 providing an opportunity to visit the Great Wall of China, the Terracotta Warriors, a Panda Research base, a local high school and more. To get an idea of what these study tours look like, click here to view a short video or join us for the China Tour information evening on Tuesday, 8 April in the SRSC. Click here to register your interest or attendance.

This is only one of a number of international tours in the pipeline and we look forward to sharing details about these as they are confirmed.

Learning Progress Meetings

Feedback from our 2024 Parent Survey indicated that the majority of parents prefer the Learning Progress Meetings (LPMs) to remain via Zoom. As such, only our Year 7 LPMs will take place onsite this term (Tuesday, 25 March) with all other year group LPMs conducted via Zoom. All the LPM dates for the year for all year groups, can be viewed in the Student Diary or via the Parent Portal online Calendar.

As per last year, the Year 10 Subject Selection interviews will continue to take place on-site in Term 2 (Tuesday, 17 June). Additional information will be sent to parents closer to the date of these events.

Did You Know?

Rosebank’s campus is home to some of the most stunning and unique architectural designs, blending centuries-old Benedictine traditions with modern flair?

Rosebank isn’t just a school – it’s a living piece of history, with its roots going back to the Good Samaritan sisters who shaped its soul and purpose.

Rosebank is a spiritual retreat, where the Good Samaritan Benedictine Charism guides everything from academia to how we treat each other.

Rosebank's rich history and cutting-edge programs bring to life a tradition for today – constantly evolving, yet deeply rooted in its Christian values.

Rosebank has created a truly special community, always working together to make a difference.

We warmly invite you to the Ministry ‘Tour and Tastings’ Parent Education Gathering (PEG) this Tuesday, 25 February, from 6pm to 8pm.

During this special event, Dr. Paul O'Shea will guide us through the rich Good Samaritan Benedictine Charism of Rosebank and provide an enlightening look into the deep history of our school.

We look forward to seeing you there and sharing this valuable experience together.

A Heart That Follows God

John 3:11

11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil but imitate what is good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God.

When you plant a seed – let’s say a tomato plant – we expect a tomato plant to grow. The seed determines the plant that will grow. If we plant a lemon seed, then logically we would get a lemon tree. We can easily identify the plant by its fruit: tomato plant, tomatoes and a lemon tree, lemons.

In the same way, when we belong to God, we should expect goodness and righteousness to grow in our lives. We can identity the work of God in our life by identifying the type of fruit we produce, if we have our life rooted in our faith, then we live and act in accordance with God’s word.

In this passage John reminds us to carefully check what type of fruit our lives produce. When we truly belong to God, and we spend time with God, our lives should reflect and imitate the life of Jesus.

With the season of Lent two weeks away, now is the perfect time to reflect upon the way we live our life. Take a moment to consider your own thoughts and actions. Here are some questions that may be worth asking.

  • Do your actions show a heart that has a close relationship with God?
  • Are you spending time each day reading the bible?
  • How is your prayer life?
  • Do you give to those in need?

SRSC News

The beginning of the year is always an exciting time for the SRSC as we welcome students and staff back from the holidays. Much of the conversation is about what we have been reading and an organic swap meet of books.

Rosebank is committed to support ‘Reading Routines’ as a cornerstone for students and their learning journey. As a result we have met all the new Year 7 students via their ConnectED classes as an introduction to the Scholastica Research and Study Centre. During this time we explore the many and various activities offered in the space for students and take the time to get to know their reading habits.

This year we are very excited to be able to survey each Year 7 student and match them with a personally selected novel and bookmark that we hope they may enjoy whether it is manga, historical fiction or speculative fiction, we have something for everyone. We encourage every student to read each night for at least 15 minutes before bed as an opportunity to transition from screens and the busyness of the day. We are keen to touch base with them later in the term to explore the novel they are reading and see if they would recommend it to others.

As a parent I am acutely aware of the changing nature and acceptance of young people to read. I know, it is not easy, but as parents we must persist and provide our children with these opportunities. The Australian ‘Discovering a Good Read’ research highlights, ‘Reading for pleasure, makes us happier, healthier, and more empathetic and helps us to make sense of ourselves. International research has also shown that regular reading in teens has also been seen to lead to greater academic attainment and employment opportunities later in life.’

Don’t give up and if your child doesn’t find anything in our library that meets their needs please tell them to come and see us and we will work with them to match them with the right book. As adults we need to model reading for students which was seen last Friday on ‘Library Lovers Day’ where Rosebank staff and students spent the break reading.

We are also very pleased to welcome our newest staff member in the SRSC Ms Beth Cesaro, who joins us with a wealth of experience and knowledge of all things reading. She is an accomplished librarian and is published as an illustrator of children's picture books. Ms Gyi has also been working tirelessly supporting Senior Students in their Study and choosing the best books for their sons and daughters.

Literacy and Numeracy Week is around the corner and we have encouraged Year 7 to start thinking about their favourite characters for ‘Character Day’ in March. We foster creativity in their choices, recycling clothes and raiding cupboards to represent the characters that inspire them.

“I wouldn’t be a songwriter if it wasn’t for books that I loved as a kid. I think that when you can escape into a book it trains your imagination to think big and to think that more can exist than what you see.” – Taylor Swift

EnrichED News

Welcome to the EnrichED 2025 school year. We’re starting off at a cracking pace.

Speaking of which, well done to the new Year 7 students who managed to navigate TASS to sign up for EnrichED activities for PACE. Others who would like to try the Term 2 PACE offerings should keep a watch in TASS and sign up when these appear later in Term 1.

Alternatively, students can sign up through the InspirED Booklet published Friday, 14 February but must follow that up by selecting the same activity for PACE. Parents are reminded to complete the permission form linked to the InspirED Booklet to ensure that their children are able to participate in the activities they have selected. Students identified with high potential can apply for Tournament of Minds, Future Problem Solving, Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA), National History Challenge, Write a Book in a Day and Chess Coaching for Term 2.

Students from Years 8-12 should also check their Friday, 14 February emails for the InspirED Booklet and complete the Google Form linked on the back page to express interest in any of the over 30 opportunities available throughout this year.

Several activities have already begun or will start soon. For those with limited spots, availability will be based on a first-come, first-served basis.

Currently, we have students preparing for the Da Vinci Decathlon, the Senior Schools Ethics Olympiad, MUNA and Future Problem Solvers, where we have one team polishing their work for the global finals in Bloomington, Indiana in June and another team preparing to entry the local competition for 2025.

Two InspirED activities occurred over the summer break, with Steven C and Madeleine M (now Year 11) successfully completing a unit towards an undergraduate degree at Macquarie University. Lucy C, Sophia F and Ben G (currently Year 12) participated in the National Youth Science Forum, an eight-day residential program hosted by ANU. Below is their recollection of this fabulous opportunity. Anyone in Year 11 contemplating a career in science should talk to these students and consider applying for this when applications open next term. Be on the look out for an Assembly item later this term and messages on the electronic boards and in the daily notices at the end of Term 1/beginning of Term 2 to find out more.

National Youth Science Forum

From the Monday, 6 to Tuesday, 14 January, we had the incredible opportunity to attend the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) at the Australian National University.

The NYSF is a nationwide program run by student staff volunteers, designed for Year 12 students to explore existing and new passions in STEM.

This experience broadened our perspectives on science, exposing us to its diverse and evolving innovations and fields.

Throughout the program, we participated in multiple STEM visits including:

  • ANU Particle Accelerator - Australia’s largest particle accelerator
  • Snowy Hydro - exploring sustainable energy generation through hydroelectricity
  • The Australian Signals Directorate & ANU Co-Lab - Investigating historic and modern cryptography, ciphers and code!

During these STEM visits, we were able to gain firsthand experience in a variety of fields in science and had the opportunity to work with leading scientists. Another aspect of the program was the Great Debate, in which we were given the opportunity to discuss space ethics as we looked at the example of the Challenger disaster. We were also offered the opportunity to meet and engage with STEM professionals, exposing us to possible career paths and allowing us to network with NYSF Alumni.

Our favourite part of the program by far, was being able to connect with like-minded individuals, experts in their fields, and student staff volunteers.

To anyone, even slightly considering NYSF for 2026, we highly recommend you to put yourself forward, and apply for this opportunity. If you have any questions about applying to the program, do not hesitate to contact us!

Lucy C, Sophia F and Ben G (Yr12)

The College Colloquy has been offered a veritable feast of events for this term with eight opportunities on offer.

The next newsletter will have student reflections on an evening with Hugh Mackay exploring Australian society in ‘The Way We Are’ and commentary on the author Pankaj Mishrah reflecting on the ongoing war in Gaza, examining how competing narratives of colonialism, national identity and justice collide with tragic consequences for all. Mr Mishrah will be in conversation with Executive Director of The Ethics Centre, Simon Longstaff.

In early March students have tickets to ‘Is Language Power? with Professor John McWhorter of Colombia University and will also attend Sir Simon Schama’s discussion of contemporary culture, Jewish history and the Holocaust in the context of growing antisemitism globally but also locally.

Coming up in March are three events in 'The Ethics of’ series, looking at Journalism, Duty and Democracy. Students who are interested in signing up for the College Colloquy email list where they will be offered everything available and choose only those events that interest them should contact Ms McArthur via email: cmcarthur@rosebank.nsw.edu.au
